Bowl-A-Thon Boosts Pet Families: More Than $70,000 Raised for The Pet Project

By John Hayden

The balls were rolling, the pins were falling, and donations were piling up. The Pet Project’s annual Bowl-A-Thon raised more than $70,000 to advance the mission of keeping pets and people together.

The party went down Saturday at Manor Lanes in Wilton Manors. The popularity of this event has grown to the point that, this year, there were more teams (21) than they had lanes (20).

“This is just amazing. We had to split people around,” Pet Project Executive Director Sue Martino said.

It’s a good problem to have. She gave up her spot so another could bowl.

“We are bowling for our pets. Our lovable furbabies,” Jamie LaChoy said.

She’s part of the Imperial Sun Court of All Florida and was bowling for their team. The cherry on top to the day is that one donor agreed to a 50% match, which helped push the total over $70,000. When a person gets sick, they often have to surrender their animal because they can’t care for it anymore. The Pet Project steps in with food, care and other essential services.

“This is gonna allow us to keep pets and people together forever,” Martino said. “We just keep pets in their home with their families.”
