Community Celebrates Trans Day of Visibility

By John Hayden

Visibility is vital. That was the message, and the point, of Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV).

Observed every year on March 31, it is an opportunity for trans men and women to celebrate who they are and for allies to stand beside them. TransInclusive Group hosted this year’s event at The Pride Center in Wilton Manors. Joyful musical performances were sprinkled in between speakers who shared their stories.

Activist Rajee Narinsingh read a spoken word poem called Transgender Anthem and Declaration.

It reads in part, “Transgender family, let us shine bright. And let our light lead us through every earthly plight.”

Local barber and U.S. Army veteran James Tyrcha says he’s been attending TDOV events for five years and was excited, and a little nervous, to speak for the first time.

“From the age of 3 I carried an intrinsic understanding that my physical form did not align with my true self.”

He was bullied in middle school by students, staff, and his mother who committed him to a mental health facility. Tyrcha was Mr. Ramrod 2023 and credits the leather community’s support for him thriving and surviving.

“We know the truth. Our identities are a triumph, a testament to the human spirit, resilience, and the capacity for joy.”

For many, visibility is painful. One speaker shared the story of her father abusing her when she came out as trans, and how he eventually learned to accept and love her for who she is.

“For some of us, visibility came with pain. It came with rejection and it came with violence... Too often people see the strength. They see the confidence. They see the growth. But they don’t see what it took to get here.”

While sometimes moved to tears, the audience always gave applause and at least one standing ovation. In addition to the speakers, an Italian buffet was served, and service organizations including CAN Community Health and SunServe were on hand to share their help.

And, underscoring the political persecution of the trans community, voter registration was available.

When Funding Is Down GMCSF Raises Its Voice

The number two resonates with the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF). Two shows, two venues, two sellouts, $200,000. Over the weekend, the chorus did two ABBA shows at two different spots, selling out both. They also announced that grant cuts at the federal and state levels have seen $200,000 in funding evaporate. More LGBTQ-targeted cuts are expected next year.

Music, Money, & Community Come Together at Florida AIDS Walk

Loud music and crowds with cocktails swarming Fort Lauderdale Beach are pretty common on a Saturday during Spring Break. But the crowd is rarely over 30 and there at nine in the morning. But that was the case on March 21, as hundreds gathered for AHF’s annual Florida AIDS Walk & Music Festival.

Friday's Furry Friend

Seven-year-old Draco would love to go home with you. This fellow is a 70-pound standard poodle who was given up because his family is moving. Draco came in with Theo, another standard poodle who we believe is his dad. The pair is affectionate, love to be with people and are good with kids. It is unknown how they are with felines. While they lived in the comfort of a home for many years, the past 12 months they were put in the backyard. After much-needed bathes, the pair are looking and smelling amazing. Do you have room in your heart and home for a big, curly, devoted friend?

WANING GIBBOUS MOON IN LIBRA: Truth restores your balance.

A recent heartbreak or betrayal may have shaken your foundation, leaving you unsure of your next step. Yet the storm is already losing strength. From the rawness of this moment rises a sharper self — one who finally sees the truth that only rupture could reveal. Though the impulse to flee is strong, avoidance would rob you of the clarity gained through this experience. Instead, let honesty guide you forward. The pain is real, but it is no longer your anchor. You stand steadier now, ready to reshape your path with intention, wisdom, and a renewed commitment to yourself.
