Art Walk Returns With Powerful Breast Cancer Exhibit

By John Hayden

After pausing for the sweltering South Florida summer, the monthly Art Walk returned to Wilton Manors. It went down Saturday night, with places offering lite bites and beverages.

Art enthusiasts and casual observers took to Dixie Highway up to Five Points and then up Wilton Drive. The air was light and the atmosphere filled with anticipation. Galleries opened their doors, Hotspots! held a runway fashion show and the ArtsUnited gallery hosted a powerful exhibit on breast cancer awareness. Curated by Dennis Dean, various shades of pink adorned the walls and display stands throughout the gallery.

“The majority of our artists have a story, whether they’re survivors themselves or have a family member or friend,” he said.

Dean, who lost his sister to breast cancer, wants each piece to be SEEN: Socially Engaged Exhibits and Narratives.

“Breast cancer is perfect for SEEN. This is always dear to my heart.”

The centerpiece of the exhibit is titled Wrapped In Strength, a black and white portrait of local media personality FayWhat?! wrapped in a pink cloth “ribbon,” the symbol of breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy nearly five years ago and felt especially vulnerable.

“I had just had my mastectomy and I felt like my body was rejecting me,” she said of the photo shoot. “I’m still getting used to this new body.”

She is not alone in her journey, and was surrounded this night by fellow survivors and allies. “Surround yourself with light and people that love you and adore you and want to be there for you.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and everyone, including men, are encouraged to screen themselves and get checked by their doctor. So often, including in Fay’s case, early detection is key to survival.

Friday's Furry Friend

At 7 years old, lovely Anna (ID 705228) is a sweet bully breed beauty, who’s ready to find her new family. This mellow girl weighs in at 81 pounds and carries a little extra love around the middle, but that just means there’s more of her to cuddle! She was with a family for all 7 years of her life. Now they're moving and can’t take her along. You can see the sadness in her eyes, but the right family will bring that light right back! Anna may be a bit of a couch potato, but she doesn't mind getting lots of attention…especially when treats are included. Crackers are her favorite! And, if you bring out a baby pool, she will play in the water. She also loves car rides! She is good with kids ages 5 and up, good with other dogs, but it is unknown how she is with cats.

WANING CRESCENT MOON IN VIRGO: Discernment brings release.

This week invites quiet observation rather than reaction. Professionally, clarity emerges as you step back from conflict and see the bigger picture. Someone’s words or actions may test your patience, but truth needs no argument — only precision. In relationships, tension eases when you stop trying to win and start listening. The Virgo moon softens sharp edges, helping you refine what truly matters. Let small irritations fall away; you’ve outgrown the need to prove yourself. Healing begins when you choose calm over competition and logic over pride, finding peace not in control, but in grounded awareness.
