City Opens New Playground at Stafford Park

By John Hayden

Take bright, engaging colors and put them on tough, durable equipment and you have what you need for a new playground.

Wilton Manors officially opened the new playspace at Stafford Park (AKA Island City Park Preserve or ICPP) on Sept. 13.

Under the principle of “what goes up must come down,” it’s important to note that kids will fall nearly as much as they climb, making the choice of surface important. The artificial turf is “impact surfacing” and Leisure Services Director Michelle Parks says the choice is good for kids and staff.

“It’s much safer and easier on the kids and much easier to maintain,” she said moments after the grand ribbon-cutting.

The playground is for kids ages 2 through 5 and bigger than the previous iteration. There is multi-level play, meaning there is engaging equipment near the ground for kids with disabilities. There is also a playhouse for imaginative play and the two swings are “mommy and me” swings, which allow for child and parent to be able to look at each other while swinging.

“This may be designed for all the smaller kids, but it’s a place for our community to meet and talk while the kids are playing,” Mayor Scott Newton said.

He also recognized the Kiwanis Club, which was a key contributor to the project.
