'Alibi Plaza’ Now Charging for Parking

By John Hayden

In a recent story about parking, The Gazette wrote: “Parking spaces in Wilton Manors are somewhat scarce and, unless you’re at the Shoppes of Wilton Manors by 4 p.m., rarely free.”

That is no longer true.

Parking in front of the empty strip mall and the one by Alibi and Hunters now requires payment, meaning Wilton Manors has less free parking than a Monopoly board. Signs with a QR code went up and enforcement started in early June.

If you’re just coming by for a quick bite or shopping, you may not have to pay. People get two hours of free parking until 4 p.m., then it’s just one hour. After that, the cost is $1.50 per hour until 4 p.m. and $2.50 per hour after. Whether you pay or not, you still must register on the app using the QR code.

Owners warned: “All parkers must register their vehicle upon arrival, including those taking advantage of the complimentary 1-hour parking. Registration is required for all vehicles to ensure proper use of the lot. Unregistered vehicles are subject to enforcement.”

People used to free parking took to social media to complain, blaming everyone from the city to the businesses. The stores have no say in the decision and parking is managed by the property owner, not the city.

Just last year the plan was to tear down the empty building and put a paid parking garage in its spot and build a mixed use apartment complex where the current lot sits. New owners came in and ditched those ideas.

The Gazette was told a few months ago that the empty storefronts are available for lease, but businesses looking to be primarily a bar will be accepted.

Friday's Furry Friend

Marvelous Molly (ID 698212) would love to be part of your family. A good Samaritan took her right before she gave birth to kittens. All her kittens have found homes and now Molly, who is just over a year old, is waiting for her chance. She is a bit nervous at the shelter, but once she gets to know you, she will be your best friend. This beauty is gentle, loves to be picked up and loves getting lots of pets. Molly is good with other pets and very sweet. To celebrate the Florida Panthers - Chewy is doing something amazing: for every Panthers goal scored at home during the Stanley Cup finals, Chewy is covering the adoption fee for a select pet and will provide free supplies – and Molly is one of those lucky pets.
