Sign of Things To Come: Wilton Manors Getting New Wayfinders

By John Hayden

Wilton Manors isn’t afraid to tell you where to go. After more than six years of planning and delays, the city is moving forward on new signage.

At the city commission meeting on March 25, commissioners unanimously voted to award the job to Forge Signworks, LLC. The cost: $927,790. The job will take about 14 months.

That covers the who, what, when, and where. As for the “why,” proponents say that answer is on every sun-faded, weather-beaten, dated sign in the city.

The designs were submitted in 2019. Shortly thereafter, the pandemic hit, creating other priorities.

City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson told The Gazette, “The program was designed then [in 2019] but only being constructed now because we had the opportunity to apply for the surtax grant to fund a majority of the project.”

The signage will give more than a fresh look to spots with existing signs. There will also be myriad wayfinding signs, directing people to key locations.

There will be palm trees and other local cultural icons incorporated into some designs.
