ICE Descends on Wilton Manors

By John Hayden

No one is safe. No place is safe. President Donald Trump’s deportation teams have slid their tentacles into Wilton Manors.

WMPD Chief Gary Blocker made the announcement on the department’s social media, saying two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)-led operations have gone down in the city. He was quick to say the raids are not initiated by WMPD.

“The WMPD does not initiate or coordinate federal immigration enforcement actions. ICE operates independently and determines when, where, and how to conduct its operations. ICE decides, on a case-by-case basis, if notice will be provided to local law enforcement agencies.”

However, he says ICE called on the department to help “gain access to the individual they were seeking.” Blocker’s statement doesn’t say how, or if, WMPD officers assisted in the operation. Several commenters asked for these details.

Eileen Lueck said on Facebook what many are feeling, that these raids are disconcerting to the community.

“I believe these raids have a good portion of the population on edge. There has to be a better way for ICE to take in those they are seeking without creating such havoc throughout communities.”

Trump campaigned on mass deportations and began carrying out the promise from the first day of his new term. Many U.S. citizens say they’ve been rounded up based on, essentially, racial profiling.

CBS News Miami (WFOR) found one man who claims he was detained twice.
