Local Art Studio Displays Manatee Contest Entries

By John Hayden

They’re known as the gentle giants of the sea that make their way through South Florida’s waterways. Manatees are one of the region’s pride and joys, and spotting one can be an almost spiritual moment.

But spotting one in Wilton Manors is pretty easy.

The 2024 Justin Flippen Manatee Contest combines kids’ creativity with a cultural touchstone. Nearly 500 students from Wilton Manors Elementary and Somerset Academy Village entered their colorful interpretations.

The 36 winning entries (first, second and third place for each grade at each school) were on display at Claudia Castillo ART studio, with all other entries displayed at Wilton Manors City Hall.

The manatee was a favorite of late Wilton Manors Mayor Justin Flippen, who created the contest in 2019. A cool, rainbow manatee now sits in Flippen Park across from City Hall. His friends carry on the contest.

“Mayor Justin Flippen was such a special person and my good friend,” contest organizer and local artist Claudia Castillo said. “Justin’s life was dedicated to public service as the People’s Mayor. His love for children and this community will be honored and celebrated each year as we remember his legacy with this contest.”

Winners received $25 gift cards from local businesses, and each school also received 60 additional $25 gift cards to raffle to the other participating students.
