The line wrapped around the building. Parking spots were filled. Enthusiasm was high.
Monday, October 21, was the first day of in-person early voting in Broward County and people were turning out in droves to cast their ballot. At the early voting center in Wilton Manors, located inside the former Women’s Club near City Hall, people at the front of the line said they had been in line for about 10 minutes.
In the short time OutSFL was there, around midday, the line stretched further around the building and a reasonable guess would be that the wait was probably up to 15 minutes.
One person who had been near the polling area said she had been there since 6:45 a.m. and the line had been steady.
Early voting continues 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day through Sunday, Nov. 3. If you received a mail-in ballot, drop boxes are at every early voting polling location.
Early voting has long been popular in Florida and, after the 2020 election, has become much more of an electoral force in other states. Last week, Georgia and North Carolina saw record turnout for the first days of early voting in those states.
In addition to elections for president and senator and other downballot races, Florida has several constitutional amendments on the ballot. Amendment 4 asks if people want to expand reproductive freedom, while Amendment 3 would legalize recreational marijuana use for people over 21.
In Wilton Manors the race for Mayor is on the ballot.
