The doctor is in... intriguing that is!
Danna Davis is scrubbing in with some of Wilton Manors’ best doctors and bringing their stories to the world. “Doctor’s Orders: It’s Sickening” is the latest project from Davis and her Mary It’s Mary production company.
“It’s in development and we can’t wait to get started,” she said during an interview in her home studio. “I call them health heroes. They’re all local, they’re all here, [cast], and ready to go.”
Davis and her production partner, trans icon Candis Cayne, formed their production company because most studios ignore the trans community when developing and casting shows. The result has been a series of breakthrough performances and groundbreaking productions, including Candis Cayne’s Secret Garden and a funny-yet-poignant spoof of so-called bathroom laws.
“We have built such a great team around us. We were talking about how she wasn’t getting any auditions. So we thought, ‘Why don’t you get your own show?’”
That phone call between friends planted the seed for Secret Garden, which got picked up by Hulu.
Now, Danna and her team are taking a healthy look at the doctors that treat patients from South Florida.
“The employees are so much fun and entertaining. I think it’s gonna be a hit.”
Doctor-themed shows, both scripted and unscripted, can be found on just about any streaming service. Davis and her team believe, focusing on a small community like Wilton Manors, will stand out.
“There are no LGBTQ+ doctor shows. We’re gonna learn a lot about our community. I’m excited to feature what we and the people who take care of us, the health heroes, go through.”
