Wilton Manors Approves Extra City Security
By John Hayden
Police are going to have a better idea of who’s coming and going through Wilton Manors. At their meeting on May 28, commissioners voted 4-0 (Mayor Newton was not in attendance) to approve license plate readers (LPR).
Wilton, along with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, will buy 24 readers that will be placed at 12 locations around the city. The LPRs will note the date, time, GPS coordinates and pictures of the vehicles. The data will be processed by FLOCK Security software and checked for any red flags from unpaid parking tickets to gang affiliations to AMBER Alerts.
Police and many citizens have worked for years to get the equipment. If a major crime, or a series of small crimes like car or home break ins, happens, investigators can go through data and see if the same car is entering the city around the same time.
