New Name, New Events At Bear Week

By John Hayden

Pool parties, an exclusive river cruise, porn star cabaret and more. Lauderdale Tropical Bear Week put on a party like none other. Getting adult movie legend Drew Sebastian and LGBTQ icon Crystal Waters onto the same marquee is no easy trick, but Eagle pulled it off.

Sebastian’s aforementioned cabaret show brought out longtime fans looking to see a different side of him. They were not disappointed. Though he did costume changes at a Cher-like rate, each outfit featured tight pants. Very tight pants.

He was debuting his new show, and fans got to hear him play the sax and were treated to an inside look at his culinary skills. When asked why the saxophone, he told OutSFL, “Any chance I get to blow.”

Bears took over Richardson Park on March 9. The midday party was popular from the start. A good crowd gathered and perused booths selling everything from boots to cigars to cocktails.

A DJ kept the beats going from an eye-grabbing stage until the live entertainment started, culminating in Crystal Waters’ performance.

The party used to be known as Bears In the Alley. The Eagle team decided to rebrand and highlight it as a destination. Eagle owner Chuck King is thrilled with how the week turned out. He told OutSFL the event would draw about 8,000 people.

Craig Stacey lives with his husband in Wilton Manors - the same town where he struggled with alcohol abuse a decade ago. Now, he’s sober and working on his art. He’s exhibited at Wilton Manors Art Walk.

“I have a lot of interactive paints, neons and stuff like that. I have a passion for color and lighting, thanks to my husband,” Stacey said. “He is a theater person, stage director, vocal coach and his contribution to my passion of art has just been helping me set up my tents and really getting my lights going. So the full effect of what they have can really show off to the guests walking by.”

Stacey studied fashion merchandising at Florida State University. He is working on evolving his art into new practices.

“I'm probably going to end up in a different direction, each artist has their own period and I’m moving into more of a 3d sculptural phase,” he said. “I think I'm kind of getting away from canvas work now. I'm probably going to end up doing sculpting or found object kind of artwork.” -- Mary Rasura
