A few months ago, OutSFL asked readers and the public what they thought about the idea of a new hotel coming to Wilton Manors. We have the results! And OutSFL is also conducting a second survey, this time about safety.

Exclusive: Strong Support for Wilton Hotel

By John Hayden

More than 6-in-10 people support putting a hotel on Dixie Highway just south of Five Points. Results of Out South Florida’s poll regarding the proposed hotel show 63% of respondents are in favor.

The question asks, “Do you support or oppose the current proposed hotel in Wilton Manors on Dixie Hwy?”

28% say they oppose the plan, while 9% are unsure.

“We need a hotel. This is a great location and will bring revenue,” one person in favor of the hotel said.

One opponent said, “This is not Disney World!”

The Wilton Hotel & Pool Club would be a 123-room boutique hotel with some amenities open to the public. The current version of the proposal is still being worked out with the city to make sure the project fully complies with city code.

That said, city commissioners have been very supportive of the idea.

Meet Your Neighbor

Lori Pratico is a painter and advocate who created her nonprofit Girl Noticed in 2015, which creates large-scale murals with messages that empower girls and women.

“This idea of empowering and valuing women but really noticing the girl, noticing the woman and noticing what she valued within herself -- how could I put that large on a wall, travel the United States? And make a real statement and impact? I literally, in a weekend, wrote a business plan for Girl Noticed and everything that I wanted it to be, and it pretty much became and that more,” Pratico said.

The artist is originally from Philadelphia and has now lived in Florida longer than her years spent in her hometown. When she's not working on her nonprofit work, she serves on the board of Wilton Art, a nonprofit that aims to showcase public art installations throughout Wilton Manors. -- Mary Rasura
