Hello, Islanders.

School may have started up in Palm Beach County, but our Broward County kids have a little more time to enjoy their summer. Not all of them will be returning to school with the supplies they need, so our friends at The Pride Center is participating in a Back to School supply drive!

And before you start the weekend, have you made your nominations for the Your Choice Awards? Scroll down to start nominating your favorite people, places and things.

Pride Center Collects Back to School Supplies

Between underfunded schools, underpaid teachers, and inflated prices, students are going back to school without basic supplies. Now Women With Pride and the Pride Center are working to fill the gap. They’re teaming up with the Broward Education Foundation (BEF) to help all students start the year with what they require.

“Some students may not have the means to purchase supplies and this program can help fill the gaps,” Women With Pride’s Diane Pappafotis said.

Indeed, it’s estimated more than 200,000 students in Broward County live in poverty, and 75% will start the school year without many of the “backpack basics.” Teachers will benefit too. Colorful and educational classrooms don’t pay for themselves. Too often, teachers do. Nearly every teacher spends their own money to make classrooms as engaging as possible.

BEF is also helping them. You can drop off donations in and around Wilton Manors. In addition to the Pride Center, supplies can be dropped off at Minuteman Press on Fourth Avenue, CVS on Oakland Park Blvd and 31st Avenue, and Tap That Ash next door to Hunters Nightclub.

As we unburden ourselves from recent grievances against our community that the fair hand of justice has delivered into our hands, we must not turn our back on the decisive force of anti-LGBTQ+ groups and leaders who tirelessly plot to dehumanize our people along with other minorities with clever and divisive skill. The reversed King of Wands is the ultimate tyrant, often embodied by governors like our own and by leaders with agendas as dark as that of history’s worst fascists. Doubtlessly, they are ready to deliver the next blow, which, like the reversed Ace of Swords, will cut deep into our weak defenses unless we brace ourselves to quickly recognize and act against a not so obvious but masterful misuse of the sword of justice.
