Happy Friday, Islanders!

Lots of change is coming to us, including new faces at CAN Community Health and PRISM. Also, with all the chatter about a new hotel proposal in Wilton Manors, you have the chance to share your opinion during a meeting at city hall on Aug. 3.

There's lots to do tonight, too, including Wilton Drive turning into Main Street with a Disney performance and a tribute to queer women artists at Stonewall.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Terry Dyer doesn’t sit still for long. The community activist has joined CAN Community Health as their new Director of Donor Development. CAN and Dyer made the announcement this week.

“CAN is a wonderful organization providing medical services testing, education, and full comprehensive care locally and nationally,” Dyer said.

As part of his new job, Dyer will be on the road a lot.

“We are excited to have Terry join us at this pivotal moment of growth and development,” CAN Chief Communications Officer Roger Capote said. “We welcome his keen ability to establish new partnerships, engage donors who share our mission, and to brand our successful model of health care.”

Dyer says the job will include identifying, developing, retaining, and nurturing a portfolio of individual and institutional donors. He will also work on donor engagement and finding corporate, governmental, and grant money.

Dyer most recently worked at the World AIDS Museum (WAM) in Fort Lauderdale. Though only there for about a year, he introduced the organization’s new fundraiser, the Red Dress/Dress Red gala franchise. The event and his speaking engagements helped raise their profile locally and nationally.

Artist Spotlight

Hailing from Venezuela, Jose Silva showed an early inclination for the visual arts and today works in the film industry. It wasn't until 2014 that he discovered a passion for watercolors, and his works have a focus on portraits with a Florida twist. Silva incorporates native birds and wildlife into his pieces. In fact, one of his "Walking Dead" fan art pieces was featured on "The Talking Dead" as fan art of the week.

You can view Silva's artwork at Stork's Bakery, 2505 NE 15th Ave. in Wilton Manors through Aug. 20.

Friday's Furry Friend

Sadly, 3-year-old Max's owner is ill and can no longer care for him, so now Max needs another family to love. He is GREAT with kids, well-mannered dogs, and cats! Max doesn’t like loud noises and paces when he is nervous, so the loud sounds of the shelter are not helping him.

It's in the Stars

InTarotGate by Dooney

Old systems and beliefs are slow in collapsing, but like any Tower built on weak foundations of hate and discord, collapse they shall, their bigoted figureheads falling into the chasm of oblivion. Among the ruins of cruel powers desperately grappling for the control that gradually slips from their fingers, we rise like the Page of Wands, upholding the vision of a future free of the shackles of the past. Each of us holds a wand of inner fire as unique as a rainbow, so we must stop fighting within our ranks and, unlike the figures in the reversed Five of Wands, build a united front to accelerate the eventual downfall of the patriarchy.
