City Moves Forward With Sewage Fixes and Parks Board Changes

By John Hayden

As we approach the height of storm season, concerns about sewage overflow begin to surface. But high-volume spikes are just one worry. The city’s underground infrastructure needs millions of dollars in work.

During the Wilton Manors city commission meeting on June 24, the city’s Utilities Director, Alan Dodd, updated the situation. The I&I (Inflow & Infiltration) covers what gets into sewer lines and where it comes from. Infiltration includes defective pipes, manhole cracks, pipe joints, and defects in laterals.

Inflow is water (excluding wastewater) from yard drains, manhole covers, downspouts, drainage, storm sewer cross connections, and stormwater surface runoff.

The city is using grants to fund much of the lining repair work at wastewater lift stations and the NE 26th. gravity main. Ten projects listed in the report total about $16.2 million.

Parks & Rec Four-gone Conclusion

There were four open seats on the city’s Recreation Advisory Board. Only four applicants applied, which made filling the vacancies a pro forma affair. Frank Whitaker, Christopher Restrepo, and Mark Beigay will serve two-year terms.

Incumbent member Roger Cruttenden was reappointed for a two-year term.

Departing members are George Defrance, Charles Higgins, and Dylan Salem.
